    Structural Analysis

    DPS was engaged to provide a structural analysis of a 150m long, up to 45m high conveyor structure to provide a solution to observed deflections. The aims were to determine the mechanism for observed significant vertical deflections. A recommended concept for modification has been outlined using SPACEGASS structural computer software and a report was produced, including all analyses results and immediate remedial works to upgrade the structure to minimum safety requirements. Further work was produced for complete design of three new trestles with around 40 drawings and we are currently working in the trestle modification design.

    Fire Tower

    DPS was requested to structurally analyse an existing fire tower after observations of large sway by the fire officers. The structural analysis revealed that several steel members were inadequate to AS 4100 and also showed low fundamental natural frequencies – this can contribute to large sway.

    A study of repair options unveiled the most cost effective solution to be bolstering the existing structure with a new stiff frame around the exterior. This brought the whole structure in line with AS 4100 and increased the natural frequencies to acceptable levels.

    Rising Conveyor Structural Design

    The rising coal conveyor at stage 1 of the Hazelwood Power Station provides coal to 25% of the boiler house. DPS were engaged to provide a structural analysis of this 150m long, up to 45m high structure to provide a solution to observed deflections.
    The aims were to determine the mechanism for observed significant vertical deflections. A recommended concept for modification has been outlined and a report was produced, including all analyses results and Investigate 40m high coal conveyor truss for observed large deflections and recommend solution using SPACE GASS structural computer software. Rather than costly truss modifications we designed intermediate low cost trestles to reduce loads.

    VMS Gantries

    This project involved the design of a new 6m high gantry/bridge to span approximately 55m, supporting two variable signs (VMS) and one static sign for Vic Roads. An extension to an existing gantry was also designed (see photograph). The gantry/bridge included a walkway along the entire span, and comprised the following:
    • Structural steel design to AS 5100 and AS 4100 for gantry structure for dead, live and wind loads
    • Dynamic analysis of the structure to ensure safe operation
    • Steel connection design to AS 4100 and AS 5100
    • Provision of assembly and fabrication drawings for steelwork
    • Concrete footing/pile design to AS 3600 with construction drawings
    • Provision of structural certification for the gantry/bridge
    • Design and drafting of access ladder and cage, including shop drawings for fabrication purposes
